Letting God, the Master Gardener, Choose Where You’ll Thrive

Introduction
God has a unique and intentional plan for each of our lives. Yet so often, we try to force ourselves into environments, callings, or relationships that simply aren’t right for us, not because they’re inherently bad, but because they weren’t designed for us.
Recently, I learned a valuable lesson about this truth, not from a sermon or a book, but from a humble hydrangea in my front yard.
The Lesson in the Garden
Last summer, I hired a landscaper to plant flower beds around my home. In one sunny area in the middle of the yard, they placed a lovely hydrangea. As the summer progressed, I noticed some dark spots forming on her leaves. I assumed it was a common fungus, so I had the landscaper spray her foliage with a treatment. Then, in the fall, I poured a powdered solution into the soil, thinking it would help.
Come spring, she bloomed with beautiful green leaves. I thought she was thriving.
But when July arrived with its scorching sun and heat, her leaves began to droop during the day. They perked back up in the evenings, but over time, the cycle of wilting and reviving took its toll. Her leaves began to brown and die. That’s when I realized something: the dark spots from the previous summer weren’t caused by fungus. They were caused by sun scorch. She wasn’t diseased; she was simply planted in the wrong place.
She wasn’t made for the full sun.
I immediately went to the garden center and bought a hydrangea that was designed for full sun. She looked different. She was taller and had a different texture on her leaves. I had the landscaper return. We moved the struggling hydrangea to a shady spot and planted the sun-loving one in her place.
While there hasn’t yet been enough time to assess whether the one in the shade will make it, she has some “green hope” on her leaves and stems. The point is that both plants are in their right environments.
The Spiritual Insight
That moment in the garden opened my eyes. God used it to speak a powerful truth into my heart:
We are all created to thrive and shine, but not in the same places.
Some of us are built for intense, high-energy roles—”full sun” environments—where we can thrive in the spotlight or in constant activity. Others are made for more quiet, nurturing roles—”shady places” where depth, stillness, and sensitivity bring out our best.
Neither is better than the other. Both are needed. Both are beautiful. And both were created by God with a purpose.
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

But here’s the difference between us and those hydrangeas:
They have no will of their own. They grow wherever the gardener plants them.
We, however, have free will. And sometimes, we plant ourselves in places we were never meant to be.
Maybe it’s a job, a ministry, a relationship, a city, or even a mindset. We try to force ourselves to bloom where we want to be, rather than where God has called us. At first, it might look promising. But over time, we start to wilt. The pressure grows, the joy fades, and the fruit diminishes. Why? Because we’re planted in the wrong soil.

Just as my first hydrangea began to wither in the wrong location, we too can suffer when we ignore the design God placed within us. Our gifts, temperaments, and callings are not random. They are divinely appointed.

God Knows Where You’ll Thrive
God is the Master Gardener. He knows our frame. He knows the right soil, the right amount of light, and the right environment for each of His children.
“The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought… You shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”

Our part is not to force ourselves to grow in the wrong place, but to surrender to His planting.
That doesn’t mean life will always be easy in God’s will. Even the right place will have its storms and dry seasons. But there will also be grace, strength, and fruitfulness because it’s where we’re meant to be.

Bloom Where You’re Planted, But Let God Do the Planting
You may have heard the phrase, “Bloom where you’re planted.” That’s good advice, but only if you’ve been planted by God.
When we plant ourselves according to our own wisdom, desires, or insecurities, we may end up in spiritual soil that drains us. But when we allow the Lord to place us according to His perfect plan, we will flourish, even in unexpected places.

Final Thought
If you’re feeling worn out, fruitless, or spiritually wilted, ask yourself:
Am I planted where God wants me to be? Or am I trying to thrive in a place I chose for myself?
Let God replant you if He must. Trust the process. Just like that hydrangea in my front yard, you may need a transplant, not because you’re broken, but because you were created for different light, different soil, a different assignment.
You were made to shine.
Just make sure you’re planted in the right place.
